  1. Classical and modern heroes have a lot in common. For example, all heroes seem to be people of perfect virtue with one or two extraordinary talents that defeat some entity of malevolence by applying their extraordinary talents. These talents of have been consistent for about the past five millenia and go along the lines of extreme physical strength, high intelligence or cleverness, bravery and courage that is second-to-none, and some ability that relates to some weapon that was state-of-the-art, at the time. Another consistency among the heroes of the ages is that they all have stories related to them: Achilles has the Iliad, Beowulf has the epic named after him, and Spider-man has about a dozen or so different comic-book series in which he is regularly the hero.

  2. Classic and modern day heroes both have removed some obstacle or liberated themselves or others from a suffering in thier lives which any other 'regular' person could not do. Usually, a hero possesses traits or characteristics that are not easily attained or take a transcending amount of physical or mental capacity to uphold. For instance, Beowulf had to fight Grendel, while still keeping his promise that he would not use any other weapons but his hands. In that tale, not only was that physically imposibble to fight with the likes of Grendel, but to fight without a weapon was unheard of, especially at losing odds.
A modern hero, does not have to fight off monsters these days, but must still possess skills that an average person wouldn't. For example, Captain Chesley B. Sullenberger III has been universally hailed as a hero after pulling off one of aviation's all-time great escapes, by safely landing US Airways Flight 1549 in the Hudson River on january 15, 2009, thus saving all 155 passengers onboard. He is regarded a hero today, because who knows what an 'average' pilot would have done?

  3. What classical and modern day heroes have in common is their service to humanity. Heroes of classic and modern day times usually have had a difficult background, and sympathize with average, normal, everyday individuals. Both heroes of these eras are faced with difficult tasks to overcome; to protect the people being afflicted by some source of intimidation and fear. Another thing classical and modern day heroes have in common is the support, and fame they achieve, or already posses because of their good deeds to society. Lastly, classical and modern day heroes generally are icons and idols that are remembered for generations, told orally, in writing, or on movie screens.

  4. Classical and modern day heroes do have something in common. Their job is to protect and serve those around them. Just as The Danes depended on Beowulf to seek revenge against Grendel's mother for killing Hrothgar's best friend, Batman sought revenge against The Joker for terrorizing Gotham City.
